Carbon Offsetting for Earth Day

Bohlke International Aviation and M&N Aviation, our sister company in Puerto Rico, are carbon offsetting the fuel from four flights on Earth Day, Friday, April 22. The carbon offsets will be purchased through Avfuel’s Carbon Offset Program.

To carbon offset the fuel used on Earth Day, Bohlke and M&N will pay a small additional per gallon fee. This fee is then used to purchase carbon credits that invest in green projects.

About Avfuel’s Carbon Offset Program

Avfuel’s Carbon Offset Program provides mixed-allocation funding for forestry, wind power, solar power, surf and biomass projects. All projects meet the strict requirements of either the United Nations or the Gold Standard to ensure full levels of due diligence and compliance. The project receiving Bohlke and M&N’s Earth Day carbon offsetting funds is the production and dissemination of ceramic water purifiers by hydrologic, in the kingdom of Cambodia. You can learn more below.

Every carbon credit purchased offsets approximately 100 gallons of jet fuel. Avfuel’s carbon credit calculator is based on an industry-standardized formula, measured in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol and the ISO 14064 Standard, and utilizing carbon dioxide emission coefficients as assigned by the U.S. Energy Information Administration.

More About the Carbon Offset Project

To date no Ceramic Water Purifier programs have been commercially viable in Cambodia. With the assistance of carbon finance, this project can be economically sustainable and provide a significant improvement in public health and household welfare. This project will provide access to adequate levels of clean drinking water to an estimated 1.7 million people across 312,000 households over 7 years. This project directly addresses several of the United Nations Millennium Development Goals (MDGs), including goal 4 and 7, and especially to halve, by 2015, the proportion of the population without sustainable access to safe drinking water and basic sanitation. It also integrates the principles of sustainable development into country policies and programs and reverses the loss of environmental resources; reducing child mortality, improving maternal health, combating disease, and ensuring environmental sustainability.

Greening Our FBO

In effort to work toward a more sustainable future, Bohlke is also implementing sustainability features in our new FBO facility, including solar power and LED lighting. We also hope to be able to offer carbon offsets to our FBO fuel customers soon.

These are the first steps in a challenging, yet vital, process for our company, our island, our industry, and our world.
